Our Pillars

Alpha Sigma Upsilon was established and founded on five values. These pillars are: Leadership, Citizenship, Scholarship, Fellowship, and Sound Character. Women of Alpha Sigma Upsilon should embody all of these pillars and practice them in their every day lives. Many of our activities and events revolve around the pillars.

Scholarship

The scholarship pillar is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend time cultivating her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward. Our sisters are involved in research, study abroad, maintain a minimum 2.75 grade-point-average, and take full-time class loads. In 2022, ASU received PHA's highest new member GPA award.

Citizenship

The Pillar of citizenship can be reached in a variety of ways. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in an Alpha Sigma Upsilon sister. As a chapter, ASU is highly concerned with giving its all to the Ohio State and Columbus communities. Through our service and philanthropy committees, we value citizenship in the communities we live and serve in. We serve our community through our three philanthropies: American Heart Association, Columbus Humane Society, and Farm Aid.

Leadership

Leaders take the initiative to aid others wholesomely throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. Our women are in leadership roles in various other clubs, activities, internships, and jobs, developing their leadership skills and teaching us what they learn.

Fellowship

A woman who practices fellowship has the community's best interests at heart and experiences friendly associations, especially with people of shared interests. They value fun and good fellowship as the cement of the community. These women take the extra step to work with others within the community and strive to create new connections. Our sisters do this by being involved with many different organizations throughout the university, as well as keeping good friends in a diverse amount of organizations.

Sound Character

Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constantly striving to make the right choices day after day. Women with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions. Our women have sound character, as proven by their interactions with peers and professors, how we represent ourselves, and how we speak for the agricultural community.
